Here’s a question nobody in the travel management industry likes to answer: What happens to the organizations that don’t fit the traditional mold?
For decades, business travel platforms have been designed for a single type of buyer. That “typical” buyer is an organization with a dedicated Travel Manager, a formal policy and the patience for a months-long implementation process. The industry assumed that every organization would eventually grow into that model.
A huge chunk of the market never did. And nobody built anything for them.
Many organizations allow their employees to book their own travel. There’s no centralized program, no single person in charge and no booking platform. If someone needs to fly to Chicago, they open Expedia or Google Flights, they expense it later and then everyone moves on. That independent booking approach works—until it doesn’t.
The truth is that organizations with self-managed travel programs often overpay for flights, have little to no visibility into what’s being spent and handle disruptions by going straight to the airline, hotel or rental car company (where they don’t find much support).
At JTB Business Travel, we saw this gap between traditional companies and independent booking cultures widening. We designed Teal Essential to close it.
Modern Tech Built on a Strong Partnership
Teal is the foundation of JTB Business Travel’s modern approach to travel management — a single platform designed to support organizations at different stages of their travel journey.
Built in partnership with Spotnana, Teal brings together booking, visibility, policy and support into one connected experience. From the start, the goal was to create something more flexible that could adapt to how organizations actually operate.
As Teal evolved, it became clear that one size wasn’t going to work for everyone.
Some organizations needed a fully customizable, policy-driven solution with deep integrations and global controls. Others wanted a simpler, ready-to-use experience that could support independent booking without adding complexity.

That’s where JTB introduced two distinct options within the Teal platform:
- Teal Essential, designed for organizations with self-managed travel programs that need speed, flexibility and immediate value
- Teal Premier, built for organizations with established travel programs that require customization, control and scalability
This tiered approach was a deliberate decision to meet the market where it is. In fact, the concept of offering a streamlined, ready-to-use option within the platform was something new even to our technology partner.
The result is a single platform, purpose-built to support a wide range of travel needs. In the past, some organizations have been forced into models that don’t fit their operations. The Teal platform and its different offerings solve that problem.

The 4 Pressing Needs of Self-Managed Travel Programs
When we dug into what organizations with independent booking cultures were dealing with, the same pain points kept surfacing:
1. They Could Find Better Deals on Consumer Sites
A lot of organizations tried a booking tool at some point and found the inventory limited or the pricing uncompetitive (or both). Their Travelers could genuinely do better on a consumer site, so they stopped using it. Teal Essential flips this by pulling from modern supply integrations across air, hotel, rail and car. These integrations make the platform convenient to use while delivering the best deals available.
2. Traditional Implementations Take Too Long
Traditional implementations take weeks if not months. But smaller companies with no Travel Manager don’t need complex policy configuration, system integrations or training rollouts. Teal Essential is a ready-to-use configuration that allows organizations to go live in just hours.
3. Zero Visibility
When employees book across different sites, the organization has no way to track spending, identify trends or even know where people are in an emergency. Teal Essential gives organizations a single dashboard for all of it — without requiring them to build out a full program just to get basic visibility.
4. No Support During Disruptions
Canceled flights, oversold hotels and last-minute changes are facts of life in business travel. But independent bookers deal with those scenarios on their own. With Teal Essential, they get access to JTB’s global support network, which includes real people with real context about the Traveler before they even pick up the phone.
5. The Common Thread
These organizations with independent booking cultures don’t just need a stripped-down version of enterprise software. They need technology that’s purpose-built for the way they travel. That means tech that’s fast, modern and easily integrates into self-managed travel programs as they’re run right now.
Early Users Love Teal Essential
Less than 3 years ago, when we migrated our existing client base from offline booking to our previous platform (JTB MarketPlace), that process took more than 2-and-a-half years. The process was long because hundreds of accounts needed to be migrated one at a time.
This time, we migrated a similar number of accounts to Teal Essential in two batches in a single day.
Within two months of launching, we’ve seen a 20-percentage-point increase in online booking adoption across those accounts. That increase is a huge indication that Travelers are finding what they need on this new platform. In short, they are behaving as if the tool is actually worth using.
“When we experienced what Teal Premier could do for our managed clients, we knew we could bring that same technology to a broader audience,” said Geert de Boo, General Manager and Vice President of Global Business Travel at JTB USA, Inc., the entity that manages the JTB Business Travel brand and network. “The results have confirmed that. We’re just getting started, and we’re already seeing a significant change in how these clients engage with the platform.”

1 TMC, 3 Different Options
With Teal Essential now live, JTB Business Travel now has a product for every stage of an organization’s travel journey.
Teal Essential is for small to mid-size companies with flexible, independent booking cultures. It’s self-service, modern, competitively priced and backed by real support. There’s no lengthy implementation process and no Travel Manager required.
Teal Premier is a fully customizable platform for organizations with established travel programs. It offers policy controls, real-time reporting, sustainability tracking, HR and expense integrations. It’s a comprehensive toolkit built for global scale.
Preferred is our high-touch, advisor-led solution for larger organizations where personalized service is the priority. This is the “traditional” model that’s been commonly used in business travel for decades, as described above. Some organizations want a human being managing every detail, and Preferred delivers exactly that.
No option is better than another. The three products exist because a 30-person firm booking a few dozen flights a month doesn’t need the same tech and services as a Fortune 500 company (and vice versa).
What’s Next for JTB Customers
Teal Essential is live today, and it’s going to keep getting better. We’re actively building new features and enhancements designed to make the platform even easier to adopt and more valuable over time.
But the bigger picture is this: The way organizations handle business travel is changing. Not every organization will run a formal program, and that’s fine. What they deserve is a partner that actually understands that and builds accordingly.
That’s our goal at JTB Business Travel.
